Canva is one of the best video and music editing tool for creators. In this article, I will go over how to add music, soundtracks to your video or image designs. At the same time, I will show you how to edit and customize them.
Keep in mind that any music you add on the Canva platform is defaulted to 5 seconds, but you can edit the duration and where you want to music to start or end. This will be explained later.
Select Your Template
To begin, navigate to the upper right corner of the homepage and click “Create a Design.”
You can choose what you want, with options including:
- YouTube Shorts, Tiktok Video, Instagram Reel (1080 x 1920 pixels) – These are for video creators that want to post on the platform that optimizes for mobile.
- Instagram Post (1080 x 1080 or 1080 x 1350 pixels) – For standard Instagram posting. Adding some nice template designs and music will help you stand out.
For this example, I will use “YouTube Shorts” to start with a blank canvas. From the left-hand menu, choose a template. Templates will give you a pre-designed one and it is useful for those that are terrible with colors and designs (which I suck at).
Adding or Uploading Music, Soundtrack and Audio on Canva
Adding your own music is really simple. Click on the “Upload” button on the left side. You will see the option to upload files or record your own audio. Go ahead and upload your music. It accepts most of the common files like wav and mp3.
Once uploaded, your audio will show up under the audio tab. You can now proceed to add them to your presentation. You’ll notice a timestamp indicating where the music is placed beneath your video. You can adjust its position by placing your cursor where you’d like it to start.
You can pull the audio bar to shorten or lengthen it for duration to fit your video.
The cool thing about Canva is that it allows you to also decide where you want the music to start or stop. To do that, you want to double click on the audio and it will show the entire length of the audio and you can slide it to where you want the music to loop.
This function is great for making Tik Tok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, where you want catchy music to engage with the audience.
You can also add multiple audios to each slide of your choice. Here is what a video would look like with multiple audio files looped with music + audio voice over.
Keep in mind that you can also adjust the volume of each audio by clicking the volume icon and lower or increase it to fit your video.
For further customization, click on the three dots to apply different effects to the track. If needed, you can also delete the audio.
This allows you to control the music volume of your background and the narration if you are doing a tutorial, documentary or just plain commentary.
Using Canva’s Music
You can choose to use music or audio from Canva’s existing platform. Click on the “Elements” icon and search for “Music” in the search bar. Then, you want to look for the “Audio” tab under the search bar. It will start showing the different music available.
If you are a free user, you want to check the “Free” option under the search filter that is located directly on the right side of the search bar.
Upon entering the audio section, you’ll discover a diverse range of soundtracks and music to choose from, categorized by genre and mood. There’s a selection of both free and paid options. You can even preview the tracks if you don’t have Canva Pro. After choosing your desired audio, it will be added to your video.
